Master pop archeologist, Karl Wallinger has been painstakingly reconstructing the 60s in his studio as a hobby for years. Not many have heard those recordings, but what Wallinger releases to the public in the form of World Party has been cited by many critics as a faithful progression of the form. One critic even wrote that Shes The One from his current Egyptology sounded like what should have been John Lennons follow-up to Imagine. The founding member of The Waterboys set out on his own to form World Party in the late 1980s with the release of Private Revolution, and found instant critical acclaim. The follow-up, Goodbye Jumbo yielded radio success for songs such as Message In A Box and Way Down Now. Since then, his infrequent albums have been highly anticipated and well worth the wait. Mostly a creature of the recording studio, touring is not standard procedure for Karl, but this week's Big Bang proves that it should be. Karl highlights songs from his new Enclave release, Egyptology, including the current single, Call Me Up, and the aforementioned She's The One. You'll also hear favorites like Ship of Fools and Message In A Box. The broadcast includes an intimate backstage interview with Replay Magazine Editor Dan Durchholtz. |

Since the release of his breakthrough album, Girlfriend, back in 1991, Matthew Sweet has been one of modern rocks most respected and prolific singer-songwriters. Girlfriend introduced him to fans as a classic pop tunesmith, a guy who could fit catchy melodies into lean, atmospheric arrangements that nodded to the Beatles and the Byrds while maintaining a contemporary edge. On his follow-up album, Altered Beast, and his EP Son of Altered Beast, Sweet dabbled in darker, noisier textures. But in 1995s 100% Fun, Sweet re-affirmed his flair for buoyant songcraft--and had his biggest hit to date with the cheeky single Sick Of Myself. For his latest album, Blue Sky On Mars, Sweet got even further back to pop basics and youll get a chance to hear a number of songs from the new album including the single, Come To California, sweet classics like Girlfriend, Ive Been Waiting, Winnona, and a playful cover of The Electric Light Orchestras Do Ya. New York correspondent for the Los Angeles Times and Entertainment Weekly, Elysa Gardener conducts an intimate backstage interview as part of "The Big Bang." |
